Herne Hill station is a multiple junction, served by mainline suburban ('overground') trains, but longer distance trains from Kent don't usually stop here.
The station forecourt here is actually part of the recently semi-pedestrianised southern end of Railton Road, with widened pavements and block-paved roadway. This end of the road is is no longer a through road, having been closed off about 100 m to the right (out of sight of this photo). The changes have created a nice little town-square feel to this area (see accompanying pictures). This is all part of Lambeth Council's Herne Hill Regeneration Scheme. Previously it was busy with slow traffic waiting for traffic lights, and cluttered with parked vehicles everywhere. The 'feel' of all this good, even though the changes have been relatively simple, and the buildings remain the same.
NOTE ON THE STATION
Herne Hill is a junction station. The railway lines which come into it run above street level on long viaducts. The level is indicated by the railway signal light and viaduct parapet (far R). The station was designed by architect John Taylor and railway engineers Joseph Cubitt and J.T. Turner. It opened in 1862 when it was operated by the London, Chatham and Dover Railway. The station tower concealed a water tank for steam locomotives. It is now Grade II listed. (Information from en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Herne_Hill_railway_station)

The main service operated by Network Southeast is Orpington - London Victoria, First Capital Connect operate the Sutton Loop service which connects Sutton and Wimbledon to London Blackfriars, St. Pancras International, St.Albans, Luton and Bedford. Although Thameslink no longer exists as a TOC, the same name is used for the collection of routes now served by First Capital Connect (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thameslink).
